Delegate Your Resources Wisely

Getting team members motivated to excel is a difficult process, but doesn’t have to be if your human resources are utilized in the right areas. As a project manager, delegating tasks and mating them to the proper resource is critical to the eventual success of the project. Performed improperly, the project falls fall short of expectations in many areas.

Fortunately, project management skills such as delegation and leadership can be acquired and learned with the right PMP certification training. One of the skills that can be learned in a project management course is how to mate the right team member with the task at hand. Think about the various levels of strength, expertise, and amount of attraction and interest each member has in a particular area. Placing someone who isn’t a people person in a customer service situation is a path towards disaster. A team member who is exuberant about a certain task but isn’t give the chance to showcase their skills with it kills enthusiasm and misuses talents.

A lack of clear goals leaves a lot of room for mistakes, scope creep, miscommunication, and wasted development time. Objectives need to be defined upfront and accepted by everyone. Otherwise, the project opens itself up to confusion, disarray, and finally, anarchy and lots of finger pointing and blame. When project goals are clear and distinct, with everyone on board, deadlines can be set, expectations are understood, and team members can concentrate on accomplishments.

Progress needs to be monitored and accessed on a regular basis. Everyday micromanaging only brings dissatisfaction. A weekly team meeting where issues are discussed, questions are posed and answered, and miscellaneous topics are presented, gives everyone a voice and opinion. Constructive bantering is good for the overall project.

Delegation should also include responsibilities that are above the usual day to day functions. Assigning above-normal tasks can inspire and advance team members to push beyond their capabilities. And break the monotonous routine. Show team members you have trust in them and their abilities. Providing team members with additional responsibilities and power does not alleviate the leader from project responsibility. This is not the time to pass blame. As the leader, you are still guiding the project. You are still liable for the success or failure.

Delegating tasks and allowing team members to flourish can be a doable flow of work, as long as communication and planning has taken place, laying the foundation of understanding and clarity. Team members want to feel a part of something, want to feel they are valuable and indispensible. Given a chance, they will prove their worth.
