Since February of 2004 Facebook has grown in stature and compiled a sizable user community. With all popular platforms, Facebook has attracted the good and the bad. The majority of Facebook users employ the popular social network as a method to keep in contact with friends and family members. As Facebook has grown in size, businesses and other organizations use Facebook to keep their brand and mission statements in the hearts and minds of consumers. The popularity and widespread use of Facebook has also garnered its own share of security and privacy issues as well. Cyber criminals see social networking as a repository of personal identity information. Recently a suspect application making the rounds on Facebook attracted approximately three hundred thousand users, placing their profiles in a position that could be used for spam and other measures.

The suspicious application, named ‘I will never text again’, gave users the choice of viewing a video. Upon clicking on a link for the video, the application inquires the user for permission of their basic information in order to post it to their Facebook Wall. If a user agrees to this, the application link is posted to the user's wall and is sent out in that person's Facebook news feed. Other users see the link, click on it, and the link is continually propagated.

Even though the application hasn't done anything that could be considered malware, it does follow the same inherent characteristics. The video in the application does not play as promised. The Facebook page of the person who created the application, ‘Anne Klein,’ has the feel of a fake Facebook page.

Granting permission to applications such as this opens the door for unfortunate consequences. While it could be a harmless application utilized to gather user’s information for an advertising database, it can also be used for spam or the spread of malicious software as well. Users should be mindful of unknown links they click on, as they are unaware of the location it could lead. This may be nothing more than a harmless application. If not, the disadvantages far outweigh the benefits.
