How To Successfully Migrate To A New Operating System
Everyone enjoys reading about and receiving the latest and greatest ‘I have to have it’ enhancement to their favorite device. Cell phones, HDTV sets, digital cameras, computing systems, software applications . . . the list goes on and on. If the new features are installed by the manufacturer, the joys of the functionality is instantly realized. If the user is expected to install the new properties, such as software applications, the entire process may appear daunting. Taking a few precautions and following a list of step by step procedures, the final product should be a complete, working operating system.
As always, the first step should be a check list of the necessary items in the process. Namely, the CD or DVD to be installed, any cables, if a USB or other connection is required, and a good set of backup files. The next step is to clean the existing system. Run a software utility for your particular operating system that cleans the hard drive and entire software system of trash files, orphans, empties the cache, defragments the hard drive, deletes unwanted cookie files, and other system housekeeping chores. This usually takes some time so find some other task to keep you busy while the cleanup takes place.
Once completed and a near pristine system is achieved, immediately back up the entire hard drive on a second internal or external drive or system. It’s much easier to replace files and applications from backups, than re-install applications and try to remember or locate registered serial numbers, recreate user files and reconfigure all of your personal application settings.
Now for the moment you’ve waited for. With all other applications closed, insert the installation disc and follow the screen prompts. Believe it or not, it is that simple. Usually installation begins with a system check to insure your hardware is compatible with the latest software revisions about to install. Depending on the number of enhancements and your particular flavor of operating system (Windows, Apple, etc) depends on the number of screen prompts, reboots, temporary blank screens and questions you may be requested to answer. Throughout the entire process, be patient. It takes time. Interrupting the install because you may think it isn’t doing anything, could introduce problems you didn’t originally have.
Once the final screen prompt informs you the process has completed, all it takes is a system restart to clear memory and run a fresh, successful migration of your new operating system. Run a few applications to make sure everything is as it should be. And enjoy the new bells and whistles.
